Now that the sun has finally come out from it's long hibernation (AT LAST!!) I've been out to play. My boyfriend took me for a walk round a bit of Bath I'd never explored before (considering how small a city it is, it's a little embarrassing how many of these bits there still are after two years!).
We started off on the canal, and I dreamed, not for the first time, of living on the water:
But alas, he pointed out that he couldn't live on a boat, the damp would play havoc with his musical instruments (that sounds like an innuendo, but no, I really do mean guitars, amps, trumpets, etc in this case).

Don't you just love that old river gypsy style?

OK, so how about this instead?
Notice the little green writing shed, as well as the private mooring, which belong to this gorgeous house on the water. [sigh]
We then walked up some stony steps, glimpsing tantalising views through garden gates left ajar...

As I may have mentioned before, Bath sits in a big green bowl. Hills on all sides (not very good for asthma sufferers, apparently - the clouds get stuck in the valley and they stay put. Explains all the rain, I suppose). While this means that one must develop strong legs and put a lot of faith into the handbrake of one's motor vehicle, it also means that there are some spectacular views to be enjoyed, if you know the right spot.
I think we found a good spot, don't you?
We should be able to see my house from here, but I'm afraid I can't quite figure it out!
Yellow flowers, green grass, blue sky: textbook summer scenery.
We'd brought sandwiches and strawberries and a flask of tea (naturally). I don't know how long we sat there but it was the first official Sun On My Skin this year, and it was pure magic for the soul.
We then went to my friend Johnny's homebrewed beer festival, and spent the next day (or two) hungover, but that's another story...
What a great day in the sun! I love that boat, the ashby, the flowers painted on it are so pretty. I would like to live on a boat.

This is beautiful. I've never been to Bath but a friend has just got a job in a school there, starting in September. I'm already planning my visit and now we'll be going for a bit old walk as well as pretending to be Jane Austen characters...

Your photos are so bright and pretty (especially in contrast to my currently grey view...). I love your description of Bath as 'in a big green bowl' :)
ReplyDelete(Flask of tea- awesome!)
Ok... I'd love to say "what a great post" but I'm afraid I'm too busy trying to submerge the um... how to put this delicately... jealous rage that has bubbled (erupted) over.... As you may know... I waaaannnnna liiive in England!! (wailing now .... it's not pretty) and I think it SUX that I'm missing out on days like that! Clearly all the misinformed souls (morons) here in Oz who say "why would you move there... the sun NEVER shines" don't know what they're on about. Well here's the proof fellas! And to top it off you live in BATH! (sulking now... it really is NOT pretty) Sigh.... thats' all I can do really ....just .... Sigh.
ReplyDelete(And continue to live vicariously through your blog) xx
I miss that view! I used to live on the hill to the left of the field, on Widcombe Crescent! That walk is part of the Skyline Tour :)
ReplyDeleteI've just come across your blog and am therefore a little late commenting, but your post made me feel happy and sad. I grew up in Bath and you can see my childhood home from one of your pics above. I now live in flat Cambridgeshire and my mum moved over here from the same house in your pic only last year. It was lovely to see it again and I miss Bath sooo much. Thanks :)
